Around 70 Kingstree Lions Club and community members volunteered for the 8th annual Black River Cleanup.

On Saturday, May 18 the Kingstee Lions Club along with community volunteers will remove trash from the Black River. Last year, the effort cleared more than two pickup truck loads of trash from the river and its banks. The effort took 37 kayaks, three johnboats, and 20 on-land support personnel. Lion Louis Drucker organizes the event. He hopes they will have even more volunteers this year.

The Black River, which runs 75 miles from Clarendon County to Georgetown County was designated one of South Carolina’s State Scenic Rivers in 2001. The annual cleanup effort has continued to retrieve loads of trash from the waterway consisting of plastic bottles, cans, and fast food containers.

People interested in volunteering to help with this year’s cleanup day should contact Louis Drucker at (843) 382-7260 or via the Kingstree Lions Club Facebook page to sign up so there will be a count for lunch, which is provided.

Cleanup will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Black River Landing at 490 East Mill Street, Kingstree. Clean up materials will be provided by Williamsburg HomeTown Chamber and Palmetto Pride.
