Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington.

The founders were among the fewer than 1,000 African American Women enrolled in higher education institutions in 1908, and among the 25 women who received bachelor of arts degrees from Howard between 1908 and 1911.

Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Founders Day occurs on the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Since her founding in 1908, the sorority has been committed to “Service to All Mankind.” Like Dr. King, Alpha Kappa Alpha has worked diligently to pursue opportunities for the global community in the areas of education, social justice, healthcare, youth services and numerous other areas that improve the lives of people.

Lambda Theta Omega, the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, celebrated Founders Day with various activities. Chapter members attended a Martin Luther King Day ceremony in Lake City and attended a luncheon aimed at celebrating the accomplishments of the founders and the local chapter and the reclaiming of inactive members of the sorority. In addition, the chapter sponsored the Annual Day of Service Project. This year’s project involved providing lawn care beautification for senior citizens in the community. Chapter member raked yards, picked up debris, carried trash and other waste to the disposal locations in the area, presented senior citizens with floral arrangements for the home and provided other beautification efforts.

The current International Programs for the sorority are Empower Our Families, Build Our Economic Wealth, Enhance Our Environment, Advocate for Social Justice and Uplift Our Local Community. Through these program areas, Alpha Kappa Alpha continues to be a visible force of service in the community.
